Being Lazy
Man, I’m off my P90X routine and it is killing me. I haven’t done a proper workout since Wednesday of last week (though I did play a solid hour of Ultimate Frisbee on Saturday) and I am having difficult time motivating myself to get moving.
I’ve an epic excuse: I did the Shakeology three-day cleanse on Thursday-Friday-Saturday and, even with added fruit and the permitted...

Yoga X Soundtrack: Avant-Garde Version
For Yoga X tonight, I’m listening to Chris @schlarb’s beautiful album Twilight & Ghost Stories, Steve Reich’s Music for a Large Ensemble, Violin Phase, and Octet, and Philip Glass’s The Grid from Koyaanisqatsi as performed by his ensemble and the LA Philharmonic last summer. Download that last one here.

PHASE 1: How I Did
Last week I finished up Phase 1 of P90X. It was tough, but I made it through. You could even say that maybe I enjoyed it a little bit. (Which is actually a HUGE step for me, Mr. I-Hate-Sweating.)
I’ve progressed in every single one of my workouts. I’ve kept track of my reps and weights for the M-W-F lifting workouts and have improved each time I’ve done the workouts....

Make your P90X lifting workout (e.g. Legs & Back) go quicker with some progressive metal from Mastodon.

Chest & Back Progress Spreadsheet →
One of the things I was worried about when I started P90X was not getting any better. I worried that I wouldn’t push myself hard enough and I would just be doing the same number of repetitions with the same weight every time I did a workout.
So I took Tony’s advice in the DVDs and started making notes during the lifting workouts (Monday-Wednesday-Friday). Being the nerd that I am, I...

It’s been a full week since I blogged here. I’ve been doing alright this week on workouts and food. Except for yesterday—it was a hectic day with very little sleep the night before or after. I didn’t get my workout in and didn’t have much control over my meals (though even when food choices were mine to make I ate terribly). I made it through a similarly crazy day...

Tough Day: Yoga X (thanks @FitDadPDX)
Today was my fourth day of phase one of P90X—Yoga X. Honestly, this was the toughest workout so far. I’m not a very flexible guy, so lots of the poses (even with a yoga block) were frustratingly difficult. I even fell down a few times.
Also frustrating was my lack of yoga knowledge. I’ve done the Power Yoga when I tried Tony Horton’s Power 90 a year or so ago, and...

Today for Arms & Shoulders, I went for some mellow, mechanical music with a solid beat that I could synchronize my movements to.

Cut Copy - So Cosmic mix →
One thing I learned yesterday during my first P90X workout is that the music, well, sucks. I’m a former college radio DJ and I’ve been called a “music snob” more times than I care to admit. So today, for Plyometrics, I put the DVD on no music and blasted this fantastic mix from my laptop speakers.
Cut Copy is an electro-rock band from Australia and they released this mix...

First Day of P90X
I did it. One day of P90X. I survived Chest & Back and pushed through Ab Ripper X (you could say it ripped through me).
I mostly stuck to the Level 3 menu—I woke up late and ended up being a meal short.
I’m sore. My shoulders, chest, and back are weak. My legs are still sore from paintball Saturday, and they’re more worn out from Ab Ripper X today.
Plyometrics...

Hello World: I'm Ready to Get Fit
I should introduce myself and explain the purpose of this blog.
Hi, my name is Ryan Ruppe. I’m a late-twenties, recently unemployed dad. I’ve got a two year old daughter and an amazing wife who’s lost 60+ pounds since she had our baby. (Her blog is fatmomtofitmom.com and she’s on Twitter too.) I also gained some weight when we had the baby (my doctor replied, when I went...
